Peppol & AI Invoice Recovery: How to Automate Accounts Receivable
Peppol standardises invoice exchange, not payment collection. Credimigo imports Peppol/UBL files, uses accounting data or your confirmation to establish payment status, and helps automate follow-up of confirmed outstanding invoices. It is software, not a debt collection agency or a Peppol Access Point.
What Peppol does — and what it does not
Peppol connects organisations through Access Points so they can exchange structured invoices and other business documents. Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 uses structured data, commonly UBL XML, that software can process without retyping a PDF.
This solves a data-exchange problem. It does not solve every commercial problem: a customer can receive a technically valid invoice and still dispute it, miss the due date or need a payment plan.
Mandatory e-invoicing in Europe: different national timetables
Belgium requires structured B2B e-invoicing for in-scope domestic transactions from 1 January 2026, with Peppol as the default. Scope and exceptions matter; consult FPS Finance guidance for your situation.
Germany requires businesses to be able to receive e-invoices from 1 January 2025; issuing obligations are phased in during 2027 and 2028. France requires reception for all businesses in scope from 1 September 2026, with issuing phased across 2026 and 2027 through approved platforms (PDP/PA). These obligations do not mean every country mandates Peppol.
The Netherlands has B2G e-invoicing and is preparing for ViDA; this does not establish a general Dutch B2B Peppol mandate. Under Directive (EU) 2025/516, EU-wide mandatory e-invoicing for intra-EU B2B transactions starts on 1 July 2030. National domestic rules remain distinct.
E-invoicing is not payment follow-up
An e-invoice records what was billed. Accounts receivable management tracks what remains due, when it falls due and what happens next. A delivery acknowledgment is not a bank transaction or a settled balance.
Peppol alone cannot guarantee payment: cash shortages, disputed work, missing purchase references and internal approvals can still delay it. Never infer an unpaid balance simply because an invoice was imported.
How Credimigo monitors and follows up open invoices
Import Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 UBL XML invoices and credit notes manually, or use available Moneybird automatic sync on an eligible plan. Credimigo validates structure, detects duplicates and privately stores the original XML and any embedded PDF. Ambiguous credit-note links go to manual review rather than automatically reducing the wrong invoice.
Payment status comes from accounting software or your confirmation. The Recovery Score helps prioritise confirmed open invoices; depending on the plan, follow-up can use automated email, SMS, WhatsApp and AI voice. Payments, disputes and payment plans pause follow-up.
Credimigo is software, not a debt collection agency or a certified Peppol Access Point. It does not send or receive invoices on the Peppol network. Exact Online, Odoo and Peppol Access Point provider integrations are Coming soon.
Where AI helps accounts receivable teams
AI can help prioritise work and make follow-up more consistent across a growing invoice portfolio. That gives finance teams more room to resolve disputed items and accountants more time to reconcile exceptions instead of copying data.
Automation works best with reliable balances and human review of uncertainty. A Recovery Score is not a guarantee of payment, and automated reminders should never override a recorded payment, dispute or payment plan.
